Carers Information and Support Programme (CrISP 1& 2) – multi-week courses for carers

Activity groups – for those living with dementia. Carers who want to stay with the person with dementia, are invited to an informal peer support at the same time

Cognitive stimulation – for people living with dementia

Music Activity Sessions – for people living with dementia and carers

Living Well with Dementia – 7 week course to support people with a diagnosis of an early dementia to support them to live well with their diagnosis

Carers Information and Support Programme (CrISP 1 & 2)
CrISP 1 has been designed specifically for carers, family members and friends of people with a recent diagnosis of a dementia. It consists of four sessions covering Understanding dementia, Providing support and care, Legal and money matters and Coping day-to-day

CrISP 2 has been designed specifically for carers, family members and friends of people who have been living with dementia for some time. It consists of three sessions covering Understanding how dementia progresses, Living with change as dementia progresses and Living well as dementia progresses, including occupation and activities.

The next CrISP 1 course will take place for five consecutive weeks from Friday 14th July between 10am and 12.30pm at Priory View, Church Street, Dunstable LU5 4FG. To book a place, please call the Alzheimer’s Society on 01234 327380. The next CrISP 2 session will take place in September 2017. Carers attending the course say they feel they have been provided with practical information that they can use in coping with living with dementia day-to-day, that they have received information and an understanding of how to plan for the person they look after now and in the future and have benefitted from peer support and sharing experiences.

Living Well with Dementia Programme
A programme that aims to help people living with early stage dementia develop the understanding, skills and practical tools, to empower and support them to take an active role in the management of their own health and well-being

The next Living Well with Dementia programme will be for seven consecutive weeks from the 26th May between 10.00am-12.00pm  (23 June session only will be 12.30pm-2.30pm) at The Rufus Centre, Steppingley Road, Flitwick, MK45 1AH. To book a place, please call the Alzheimer’s Society on 01234 327380. People who have attended the course previously said that they feel that they are able to share their experiences and learn from each other. The programme supports to build confidence and acquire some practical tools to live well with their diagnosis.

Activity Groups

The Alzheimer’s Society Activity Groups for people living with dementia/ We have an overarching theme of reminiscence from April until the end of June on topics such as music, Fashion, the home and food.

Activity groups are held in Leighton Buzzard and Shefford. We will also introduce a new group into the West Mid Beds area shortly.

We have also introduce our new Oomph session in Dunstable. The sessions are designed to enhance the mental, physical and emotional wellbeing of older adults. This session is specially designed for people with dementia according to their ability within the group

The Alzheimer’s Society’s Cognitive Stimulation Groups for people living with dementia, held in Barton-le-Clay and Biggleswade, will continue in their current form until March 2017, when a new service programme will start.

Music Activity Sessions
Facilitated structured group session for people with dementia who may wish to attend alone or with a carer. The service is designed around the principles of music and moderated cognitive and physical activities, which are planned to incorporate social interaction, peer support, engagement and active participation

Memory Gateways 
Memory Gateways offer monthly face-to-face ‘marketplaces’ of services for people living with dementia and their carers and are held in Houghton Regis, Biggleswade, as well as Bedford.

Gateways are attended by Memory Assessment Centre staff and providers of services and support, and are an opportunity for people affected by dementia to:

  • find out about services
  • talk through concerns on a one-to-one basis or in a group
  • experience taster sessions of available services

Each Gateway session has a theme and there is no need to book.

Carer groups
Carers in Bedfordshire are working with carers currently attending groups, and carers living in other areas of Central Bedfordshire, to ensure that support from April 2017 is designed together with carers to address their needs and requirements. You can download our timetable here.

Dementia volunteer befriending
For carers registered with Carers in Bedfordshire who live with someone who has dementia, Carers in Bedfordshire may have a trained volunteer who can visit regularly. This service is free of charge.

Visits will usually be weekly for two hours on a Monday – Friday between 9.00am 5.00pm.  The same volunteer will visit each week and most volunteer befrienders only visit one family - really building up rapport and trust with each other.

Memory Navigation Service

A telephone based service, providing information and support for people with memory concerns or a dementia diagnosis, and their carers. This service is run by Carers in Bedfordshire, in partnership with the East London Foundation Trust (ELFT), working together with Tibbs Dementia Foundation and Alzheimer’s Society.
