Hospital Lounges

About Hospital Carers Lounges

Our Carers Lounges are  friendly, confidential spaces inside Bedford Hospital and Luton & Dunstable University Hospital; available for  family carers to drop in and take a break from the busy hospital setting.

Both Lounges are staffed by support workers and volunteers who can give you information, advice, practical and emotional support at a time when things can feel quite overwhelming. We know that supporting someone, both in hospital and out, can be distressing and  a real strain for you in your caring role. A hospital admission can also lead to an increase in the amount of care needed, either in the short or long term and the Lounges are a place for you to relax, talk through your concerns or simply have a coffee with someone who will listen.

It is helpful for us to know when the person you care for is admitted to hospital as we may be able to offer you additional support during this period so please do come and see us if you are faced with a hospital admission.  We know this can be a scary time.  We can also help you talk to hospital staff to ensure you get the information you need whilst the person you care for is in hospital, as well as give you information about discharge processes and procedures and continuing care.

You can of course visit the Lounge to update us at any time; whether you are attending an Out patient appointment for yourself or with the person you care for, or even if you need some support in your caring role and the hospital is the closest and easiest place for you to get to.

The Lounges are available to not only carers living across Luton and Bedfordshire but also those who live out of the area, whilst the person they are caring for is in hospital.

As well as information about Carers in Bedfordshire services we also have a supply of information from other organisations, both local and national, which may be helpful; including  Age UK, British Red Cross, Alzheimer’s Society and the Stroke Association.

No appointment or referral is necessary, just drop in and you will be welcomed.
