Carers are more likely to neglect their own physical wellbeing whilst they are caring. This then means that your own physical health might become poorer as you age. Take action by
- Telling your GP you are a carer so they can arrange health checks for you. Carers UK explains why the GP is important for Carers. All GP surgeries in Bedfordshire encourage carers to register with them so they can arrange regular health checks for you. Please speak to your local surgery for more information.

Taking a break as a carer is a dilemma many carers face. Often, they feel like they cannot leave the person they care for or the person they care for does not want them to leave them alone or with someone else. However, not taking a break as a carer can have long term negative effects on your physical and/or mental health.
Ways to take a break
It is better to start planning regular breaks as soon as you start caring. There are several ways you can take a break:
- Ask family and/or friends to stay with the person you care for
- Use telecare (equipment) to help keep the person you care for safe whilst you are away
- Arrange for a care worker to stay with the person you care for and/or for them to go and do something
- Taking breaks together
