Presentation about how parents support children with SEND in their development and learning - 19 May

Understanding your child through neuroscience: what we all need to know

“Every day in a hundred small ways our children ask, “Do you see me? Do you hear me? Do I matter?” Their behaviour often reflects our response. (L.R. Knost)

In our role as Play Therapists, neuroscience informs much of our work as we use our understanding of the brain to help children make sense of difficult life experiences and move forward. In this 1-hour session, we aim to explain the neuroscience behind the behaviours we all see in our children. Through an exploration of what’s going on in the child’s brain, parents can discover new ways of approaching their child’s behaviour and responding in a way that lets their child know that they do see them, they do hear them, and they do matter.

Presenter: Emma Wilkinson University of Bedfordshire

Emma Wilkinson is a Carers in Beds board member, a carer herself, as well as a researcher and lecturer at the University of Bedfordshire and works for the National Institute for Health Research Design Service.

Description: This lunchtime workshop looks at the field of carer research and focuses down on carers lives. Over the past year we've all become much more aware of research and become armchair experts in public health and this workshop is for everyone. This talk aims to put the lives of carers under the microscope to look at what information is out there and how we can use it to help support carers:

What are the sources of information, nationally and locally?

What are the burning issues for investigation?

How can you have your say and get involved in research?
