Carers in Bedfordshire are establishing an ‘early response’ service, providing timely support to unpaid family carers across the county.
This project provides a dedicated service which identifies each individual carer’s needs at an early stage. This means we can ensure that carers with the greatest need receive personalised support when they need it most.
Carers in Bedfordshire support over 8000 carers and with that number increasing every day, it is vital that they all receive a high quality service to get support that meets their ever-changing needs. Our Client Response Coordinator, Lisa Head, is already in post and is building up a dedicated team of early responders, including support workers and volunteers with at least five new volunteers trained, joining our volunteer team.
Lisa Head who is leading this project says;
“We are so pleased with the responses made by family carers registered with Carers in Bedfordshire, and delighted that they are already benefitting from this project. I think it’s wonderful that there are amazing, skilled people in Bedford who are generous enough to give their time to help our charity develop and help the carers in our community to become healthier and more supported.”
The early response project has already become a well-received service by the registered carers who have had a triage call to establish what type of support they may need, a review call to check in to see how they are and establish if there is anything more that Carers in Bedfordshire can do for them, or memory navigation service calls.
Marion, one of our new Early Response Volunteers says;
I’ve completed my training, which was thorough, interesting and fun. I’m now meeting and working with a great bunch of people who are always happy to help if you’re not sure about anything. I felt the time was right to give something back and in doing so, it has given me the motivation and strength to step out of my comfort zone. Becoming a volunteer has improved my self-confidence, and allowed me to be part of the valuable team that helped me when I was a carer."
Would you like to join our team?
This volunteer role is ideal for anyone who has a background in telephone support or information, advice or guidance. We are looking for a half day commitment a week or a fortnight so that we can build up a rota of reliable and trained volunteers, supported by our Client Response Coordinator. We supply training to help you learn about the organisation and this service and to meet other members of the Early Responder team.
This is an ideal role for anyone who;
Has experience of giving telephone support, or has a background in giving information, advice or guidance
Can give half a day a week or fortnight to make a difference in our community
Would like to join in our small, friendly Bedford Office based team
Would like to learn from our training or is looking to gain experience
Mark, who has been doing a similar role, says "I signed up because I want to help vulnerable people who sometimes get passed from pillar to post through no fault of their own. I am a carer myself so I have some insight into what people face when dealing with services"
Jewels also provides telephone support as a volunteer and says "I first got involved to keep my skills up as my background is in help and advice. I also find it’s good for my own emotional wellbeing. I get a buzz from putting the pieces of the jigsaw together for people – unless someone tells you what is out there, it can be hard to find the right advice and support"
