How to Cope with SAD

SAD (seasonal affective disorder)

SAD (seasonal affective disorder), also known as ‘winter depression’ refers to symptoms of depression that are more obvious and more severe during the winter. For some people, these symptoms can have a significant impact on their daily life.  

How to cope with SAD: 

  • Physical exercise – there is a close link between our mental health and physical health. The winter months makes it more difficult to go out, however wrapping up warm and going for a walk in the fresh air can have a positive impact on your mood and mental health. 
  • Exposure to natural light – in the winter months, the sun may not be out for as long as we would like, but it’s important to get as much natural light as you can. You can do this by sitting near a window or going for a walk when it’s light outside. 
  • Challenging your thoughts – often the way that we think has an impact on our feelings and behaviour. Have you noticed all your thoughts are negative? How can you challenge your thoughts? 
  • Plan ahead – often feeling stressed can make symptoms of SAD worse, which therefore makes us feel even more overwhelmed. Try to plan ahead or create a to-do list to reduce the feelings of stress.
