Trustee vacancies

Looking to support a local charity with an excellent track record?

We are looking for people to join our trustee board who have

Local authority background and recent commissioning experience

You will bring your insights into the process of commissioning services, market shaping and procurement, which involve identifying the needs of the community, defining service requirements and selecting appropriate providers. This knowledge could help our charity in aligning its programmes and initiatives with local needs and priorities.

It is your choice whether or not you decide to take on a caring role and it’s vital to think about how this will affect your life and wellbeing. If you feel able to offer some help, consider what type and level of support you’re able to provide – for example perhaps you would like to provide some help with transportation but would need assistance to deal with personal care.

Academic, research, policy background in the care environment

We would welcome interest from someone with the following skills/experience

  • A practical understanding of the complexity or carers lives and the context within which support is offered (a public health policy background would be helpful)
  • Sound knowledge and experience in the application of research i.e. on the effectiveness of carer support, family interventions, current policy as well as with carer experience monitoring i.e. annual  surveys.
  • An understanding of the funding landscape and potential partnerships and of the economics of caring (an academic research/policy background would be helpful)

As a trustee, you’’ll bring broad business experience to the role, identifying strategic risks and proposing effective and practical solutions. An ability to grasp the essence of complex situations, to challenge the management team or fellow board members and to contribute constructively to their resolution are also required.

You can find out more information about us and the role by reading on and using the links to Useful Resources below.

It was a good year as we also took home the award for Breakthrough of the Year at the Third Sector Awards, in recognition of our hard work on Service Delivery Transformation.
  • Our Board of trustees has an important part to play in helping the charity to achieve its mission of supporting more unpaid carers to be recognised, respected and supported in their role.
  • If you join the Board, you can make a real impact and be part of our success story.
  • Our aim is to bring together a Board who are diverse in ideas, in background, in experience, in outlook and in the views they express. If you think you can make a difference and are willing to commit the time, please consider applying.

What does a Trustee do?

Trustees are responsible for ensuring Carers in Bedfordshire is doing what we were set up to do. They make decisions about how the charity is run and agree future developments. The Board meets six times a year

  • four ‘business’ meetings when Trustees review the charity’s day-to-day activities;
  • two ‘strategy’ meetings examining bigger issues

We are looking for individuals who are:

  • passionate and committed to the charity’s mission to achieve better futures for unpaid carers
  • excited to help us solve problems in creative ways so we make great decisions such as about the services we offer or how to invest funds
  • able to build positive relationships with others, including how to challenge and influence constructively
  • willing to get stuck in and take responsibility in supporting growth successfully and responsibly

This is a voluntary role. You can find out more about the responsibilities of being a charity trustee in the Enquiry Pack.

Each trustee will use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions.
